Former Florida Gator is making an impact in the IFL
July 16, 2007
The Muskego Hitmen is the only team in the Ironman Football League that is still currently undefeated with a (6-0) record. A big reason for that is because of a very big Tight end named Markell Thompson. At 6 foot 6 inches and weighing in around two hundred sixty five pounds, Thompson is a big target for his quarterback to throw to and he rarely drops the ball. Thompson who recently played for the Florida Gators National Championship team has the speed of a wide receiver and the strength of an offensive tackle, making him a very dangerous weapon for the Muskego Hitmen.
Thompson played high school football at Dominican high school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From there he went to Southwest Mississippi in 2003, a junior college where he recorded 21 quarterback hurries while playing defensive end. He also had 47 solo tackles, 27 assists, five sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, four tackles for loss and two pass breakups.
After playing only one season with SWM, he transferred to the University of Florida where he played tight end. In 2004, Thompson played in all 12 games for the Gators, making four starts (Kentucky, Arkansas, LSU and Vanderbilt). He saw action in a tight end-best 327 plays and also played on special teams as a member of the field goal/PAT units. While attending the University of Florida, Thompson majored in History and was roommates with quarterback Chris Leak.
After the Gators won the National Championship, Thompson had try-outs with the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants of the NFL. He joined the Ironman Football League when he consulted with Angel Lopez who works with young athletes and develops them for the next level. Lopez, who currently is working with the Ironman Football League as a talent scout and in various other ventures, raved about the Ironman Football League’s class and professionalism. Thompson looking for an avenue to display his talents to AFL and NFL scouts was impressed with the IFL and decided to join. Since then he has become the leagues newest rising star and helping the Hitmen achieve greatness while impressing local scouts.
