The legend of “The Porch” continues

August 13, 2006 Scott Schreiner

Some people say that the legend of Scott Schreiner (aka The Porch) was started as a lighting strike at the 50-yard line at the stadium of the football gods. And that he was raised by the gods to spread fear over all those who stepped on the field to oppose him. Actually it just started in Franklin, WI and, yes, even at a very young age football put its vice like grip on Scott.

It started in grade school playing flag football and participating in the punt, pass and kick competition as well as the neighborhood pick-up games with his friends. When he was old enough he was signed up to play with the Franklin youth league where he played WR and LB, that went on for 2 years until family strife had forced him to move to West Allis with his dad and brother.

So football had to take a back seat until high school. Scott went to West Milwaukee High School where he quickly got the reputation as a big hitter as a freshman playing LB, NT, FB, and TE. Then tragedy struck as a knee injury dashed all hopes of playing beyond high school.

Scott joined the Army and once again football took a back seat, only playing the occasional pick up game when he could. While stationed at Ft McCoy, WI a new arena team was starting in La Crosse and was having open try-outs and once again the football fire burned through him.

After a short stint with the La Crosse River Rats once again life threw Scott a curve ball with his first child on the way and a less than stellar job market he was forced to move back to West Allis to support his new family.

One day an old friend and fishing buddy told him about a semi-pro football league called the Ironman Football League and told him to come to a team try-out. That team was the Milwaukee Venom where he earned the starting MLB job for the Venom and the football fire had consumed him.

All those wasted years of not playing, just having to watch football on TV had been let loose. Scott earned the linebacker of the year award from the Venom but the season was less than stellar as the team went 0-8.

Always looking for a challenge he parted ways with the Venom and started the West Allis Predators in 2005. With his new team he learned the meaning of the phrase “take one for the team” where out of necessity he was forced to play o-line, only once in a while getting to play on the defense.

There he plays to this very day on the o-line where opposing defenses cower and hide at the very mention of his name. As the legend of “The Porch” grows bigger every year, it will not be anytime soon that he lets playing football out of his life again.
